Jackie Stories: Author Talk with William Kuhn
Jacqueline Onassis is often remembered for her marriages to JFK and to Aristotle Onassis. In his first book about Mrs. Onassis, Reading Jackie, William Kuhn examined her legacy through the nearly 100 books she brought into print during the last two decades of her life as an editor at Viking and Doubleday, books that reveal the tastes, recollections, and passions of an independent woman.
Kuhn’s newest book, Jackie Stories, looks at her through the lens of lifelong friends and colleagues. “Each of these eight people gave me a surprising look at what it was like to live and work In Jackie’s world. “The Jackie Stories are short nonfiction pieces about her friends' houses, their clothes, and their views on the famous woman they knew well,” says Kuhn. In this intimate book, Kuhn discovered deep friendships, terrible betrayals, high spirits, and sometimes--bad behavior.
“[Jackie Stories] is a fascinating portrait of complicated friendships, first between two powerful women then ultimately between subject and author, told with humor, warmth and a gentle admiration that will make you devour this book in one sitting.” Steven Rowley, author of The Editor
Among other famous people whose lives William Kuhn has written biographies about are Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and Queen Victoria. He is also the author of the lighthearted novel about Queen Elizabeth, Mrs. Queen Takes the Train. William Kuhn taught for 15 years at Carthage College. Now retired from teaching, lives in Boston's South End.
