The Art Thief
by Michael Finkel
Discussion led by Bob Gamper
Copies available at the library
In this spellbinding portrait of obsession and flawed genius, the best-selling author of The Stranger in the Woods brings us into Stephane Breitwieser’s strange world—unlike most thieves, he never stole for money, keeping all his treasures in a single room where he could admire them. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion. This is a riveting story of art, crime, love, and an insatiable hunger to possess beauty at any cost.
The library orders multiple copies for the book discussion. Join us and become part of a special evening.
Classic Book Discussion

A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe
Led By Marge Josephson
Copies available at the library
In 1665 The Plague swept through London, claiming over 97,000 lives. Daniel Defoe was just five at the time, but he later called on his own memories, as well as his writing experience as he traced the devastating progress of the plague through the streets of London. It was a city transformed and some of its streets were suspiciously empty, some residents had crosses on their doors and the homes were overwhelmingly full of the sounds and smells of human suffering. Every citizen he meets has a horrifying story that demands to be heard.
